Bio:

Matthew obtained a bachelor’s in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 2016 with a 3.6 GPA. While at Berkeley, in addition to his academic pursuits, Matthew also worked as a lab assistant, volunteered for both a programming camp and a summer arts and sports camp, and served as an instructor for a student-lead course on effective altruism. He was also heavily involved in the dramatic arts, performing in seven theatrical productions.

Prior to Berkeley, Matthew earned top scores on his standardized tests. He scored a 2160 on the SAT with a perfect score in Math and a 34 on the ACT, placing him in the top 1% of ACT students in America. He performed particularly well in the math and science sections of the ACT, scoring a 35 in math and a 36 in science. He also obtained 4s and 5s on six AP exams, demonstrating his well-roundedness in both humanities and sciences.

After graduating, Matthew spent four years working as a software engineer on Google’s Google Fi Wireless team. During this time, in addition to sharpening his programming and problem-solving skills, Matthew also worked alongside a diverse team of individuals, further increasing his appreciation and understanding of different cultures and perspectives.

Most recently, Matthew worked as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) for the JET Programme in Japan, where he taught English to elementary and middle school students. While in JET, Matthew strove to make English class engaging by creating a fun, safe, and supportive learning environment that encouraged students to try new things and make mistakes. He met students where they were at, helping struggling students build their foundation first while challenging advanced students to push themselves beyond the scope of the lesson.

Outside of tutoring, Matthew enjoys cycling, karaoke, exploring Tokyo, and working towards Japanese fluency. He hopes to achieve N2 proficiency within the next year and a half.
