Joel earned his B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Accounting from the University of California, Los Angeles after a three-year college career. Upon graduation, he returned to his hometown in the San Francisco Bay Area to support local students as a test prep and academic tutoring professional for the SAT®, ACT, and a myriad of high school and elementary school subjects. After building up experience in the American education system for more than three years, Joel made the transition to Tokyo, where he taught the nuances of English communication to students ranging from pre-school age to retirees. While in Tokyo, Joel never lost his passion for guiding students through the test preparation process, turning his attention to English proficiency-focused exams such as TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, and Eiken.
As a tutor for both academic subjects and standardized testing, Joel prioritizes placing his students in a position to perform confidently and consistently. Every TA student has the drive required to expand his or her base of knowledge, and with every student’s passion, Joel spares no effort in ensuring that each student can demonstrate that knowledge on test, report, or presentation day.
Outside of academics, Joel spends his time in Tokyo going bouldering and playing futsal. Furthermore, he aims to pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test’s N1 level in the future.
